"I noticed the fans supported us and liked the match"

Madridistas will have the chance of seeing Real Madrid perform at home on Wednesday in the Santiago Bernabéu Trophy against Sporting Lisboa. The fans will surely be thrilled again by the Whites' brilliant display of football. Bernd Schuster expressed his support for Sevilla's Antonio Puerta and his family -the player is in grave condition since Sevilla's clash with Getafe-.

Have you ever experienced a case like Antonio Puerta's on any of your teams?
No, thank God, neither as coach nor as a player. These situations are very hard to handle and they affect the rest of the players. The importance of the forthcoming game disappears when a life is in danger. I hope he recovers soon and that he comes to play against us here again. These things scare us all.

Will Heinze and Robben play tomorrow?
Heinze will play some minutes, but Robben still isn't ready. We must be patient. I may use men that haven't played that much tomorrow. We have a very important match on Sunday.

    ||||

What do you think of everything that was said about the team during the preseason?
We know one result can change everything. We didn't earn very favourable results during the preseason, but we kept working hard. The games weren't as special as Saturday's derby and that also plays an important role. A motivated team tries its best to improve, but I believe we still haven't reached an optimum form. We are on the good path.

Do you think people are being too hasty by criticising Barcelona for drawing against Racing this weekend?
It all changes every week. The problem with us big teams is that we are forced to win every weekend. If we draw or lose we give too much of a negative image.

Are you worried about your players being too elated?
No. They needed something like this because they worked very hard during the preseason. They had to be rewarded for their efforts. This positive result has come in handy because it is going to boost our morale.

    ||||
What do you prefer, to win by playing badly, or to lose by playing well?
I prefer to win by playing well. We have to accept that sometimes we won't play that well, but we'll win because of the quality of our players. It is impossible to perform brilliantly in 60 games. I was unlucky on other teams because individual quality wasn't enough to win a game.

Are you trying to make your men understand that by enjoying themselves on the pitch they will make the fans enjoy themselves?
That's very important, but what I really want them to do is to look forward and create chances on goal by playing quickly and offensively, as opposed to waiting to counterattack. I think every player enjoys playing football and having the ball. We don't feel comfortable when we don't have possession, so we must have it as much as we can. I noticed the fans supported the team at all times and that they enjoyed the game. We won, proving to be on the best path to make people enjoy themselves again.

What do you think of Fernando Gago? Do you think he can be Real Madrid's centre midfielder?
Of course he can. I like using both him and Diarra. Fernando will be on his own tomorrow as centre midfielder. We are a very offensive team and Guti and Sneijder play as attacking midfielders, so the option of having a more defensive player like Diarra as centre midfielder is sometimes safer, depending on the rival. It is a luxury to have the option of lining up Fernando because he keeps possession of the ball and he is excellent at distributing the team's game.

Would it be a good move to sign Alves and sell Baptista and Soldado?
I know nothing about Baptista's and Soldado's situation. I think the team is pretty much complete and I can't imagine us having a new signing. We'll have to wait, though, because in Spain there is a knack of signing players in the very last minute... Fax machines are broken...

What can you tell us about tomorrow's fixture against Sporting?
We watched their match against Porto and their first fixture of the season, which they won 4-1. They are a very strong team with quality players, but this is our Trophy and we want to win it. They will complicate things for us and we will have to make a great effort to win.

Real Madrid and Sporting Lisboa will fight for the title

On Wednesday at 22:00 CET, Real Madrid and Sporting Lisboa will face each other in the 29th edition of the Santiago Bernabéu Trophy. The technical and strong Portuguese side has never participated in the now classic summer competition and will be a worthy rival for the Whites.

The 29th edition of the Santiago Bernabéu Trophy will take place on Wednesday 29 August and will pitt Real Madrid against Sporting Lisboa, who have never participated in the competition and will look to take the Trophy to Portugal.

A worthy rival against whom Real Madrid played in the 1910s in a friendly match, and years later in the UEFA Cup and in the Champions League. Real Madrid won every fixture.

    THRILLED MADRIDISMO
Tomorrow's match comes shortly after Real Madrid's brilliant victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday. The Whites' phenomenal display of quality football thrilled all Madridismo. Real Madrid's game is exciting, with its precise long passes, cohesion on the pitch, professional pride, and chances on goal.

It is still soon to make any predictions, but we can assert that the Whites started the season with strokes of artful football that anticipate that their style is going enchant their fans this campaign.

    ||El equipo blanco se lleva su trofeo tra imponerse por dos goles a uno al Anderlecht belga||

    SPORTING'S YOUTH SYSTEM
Sporting Lisboa have a great history, but above all, they have the best youth system in Portugal, which has produced players such as Figo, Simao, Cuaresma, Cristiano Ronaldo and Namí.
Its hard for a team to be deprived of players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Namí and get back on its feet again quickly, but Sporting have managed to keep Moutinho, another of their great talented players, despite several offers made for him by European Clubs.

    A QUALITY RIVAL
Sporting have several excellent players, such as midfielders Veloso, Rogmanoli, Izmaikov and the aforementioned Moutinho, who are all extremely creative and share playmaking roles on the team. Their defence is practically impregnable, with Derlei and Liedson as true nightmare defenders.

The Portugese side are a quality team, capable of stealing the ball easily from their rivals and keeping it fiercely in their possession. They have extremely technical players, many of which are internationals with their national teams. Sporting will be a tough nut to crack for Real Madrid. Let the show begin!

Real Madrid's squad held one minute's silence in memory of the deceased player

Real Madrid's training session began with one minute's silence in memory of Sevilla's Antonio Puerta, who died yesterday. The entire squad was on the pitch to remember the 22-year old player, save for Raúl, Guti, Ramos, Baptista and Saviola, who travelled to Sevilla to attend the player's burial with Ramón Calderón and Pedja Mijatovic.

The faces of every player gave signs of the grief they feel for Antonio Puerta's death, which has shocked the world of football.

Real Madrid's squad held one minute's silence in memory of Sevilla's number '16', who died yesterday afternoon at Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville, where he had been staying since he fainted during his team's match against Getafe on Saturday.

Spanish football is in mourning for Puerta. Real Madrid's players, coaching staff, equipment managers and doctors all took the pitch this morning to remember him.

Raúl, Guti –as team captains-, Ramos, Baptista and Saviola -as former teammates of Puerta- travelled to Seville with Ramón Calderón and Pedja Mijatovic to attend the player's burial.

Cannavaro, Pepe and Sneijder missed the morning session

Bernd Schuster held the first of two training sessions today in order to prepare for Sunday's 21:00 CET fixture against Villarreal. Cannavaro, Pepe, Sneijder and Robben missed training -the latter continued doing specific work on his own-. Raúl, Guti, Ramos, Baptista and Saviola also missed the session, as they are to attend the burial of Antonio Puerta in Seville.

Valdebebas woke to an unusual morning, overcome by grief and sadness for Antonio Puerta's death. Real Madrid began their training session after holding one minute's silence in memory of the Sevilla player. Bernd Schuster will also hold a session this evening, as tonight's Santiago Bernabéu Trophy fixture against Sporting Clube Portugal was cancelled yesterday due to the death of Puerta. After the minute's silence, Cannavaro, Pepe and Sneijder went to the gym to do some specific exercises, and Robben continued working out on his own to catch up with his teammates. The former two are injured with a sprain on the left ankle and a strained right femoral biceps, respectively, and work hard to be recovered for the match against Villarreal.

Miguel Torres has recovered from his ankle sprain and trained with the rest of the squad. He will be ready to play against Villarreal. Gonzalo Higuaín also trained without problems, jogging, doing stretching exercises and working out with the ball. The Argentine seems to be healed from the muscle tear on his right thigh.

    Physical and ball exercises
After jogging with physical coach Jordi García, the 19 players did some stretching exercises. They were then divided into two groups by Schuster: Higuaín, Torres, Marcelo, Heinze, Soldado, Metzelder, Robinho and Van Nistelrooy played piggy-in-the-middle, while the rest played a practice game with small goals.

The team will train again tonight at 19:30.
